We were first alerted to a problem with the roof when in 2014 small pieces of plaster started falling down. After consultations with the church architects, we were told that the church roof would have to be completely re-tiled. Over the years there has also been a problem with the heating system. A new system has been installed and now that the church is gradually drying out, further problems have come to light.
The figures from the Surveyor suggest that the work on the roof would cost over £560,000 and further work to the Chancel Tower and Apse (the semi-circular part of the roof at the far east end of the church where the glorious ceiling paintings are) would cost just short of £67,600. After the VAT and the fees have been added the total comes to just over £825,000.
So far we have raised around £196,000 for the roof fund – we have held a variety of events over the years, including:
- a sponsored hymnathon
- a fashion show
- jazz evening
- flower demonstrations
- Various talks – battleships and post boxes to name two
- an “Everest” challenge
- a Murder and Mystery Evening
In our Quinquennial Report of 2022 it became apparent that the condition of the roof had deteriorated and since then we have had a number of investigations carried out. We have internally netted the ceiling to protect against internal ceiling falls of plaster so that the building can remain open.
In 2025 we have taken further steps and have now employed a professional grant writer and have developed a team of dedicated volunteers who are working alongside professionals, e.g. our architect, surveyors etc and the Diocese Buildings Team. We have begun work on developing a 3-5 year plan which it is hoped to include redeveloping the kitchen/toilet area in church, undertake all necessary window improvements, investigate and install PV panels on a new roof, redecoration works.
We are currently in the process of raising our Grading from Grade II to Grade II* listing and are awaiting a visit from Historic England for this and for putting the church building on to the Buildings At Risk Register. This will enable us to access Heritage Lottery Funding (HLF).
We are currently awaiting revised cost estimates for all the work, in addition to waiting to go on the At Risk Register. Once we have all the information required we can submit an initial enquiry to the HLF.
It is going to be a busy road ahead but, with professional guidance, we are hopeful for a positive outcome for our ‘dream’ building works list.
How can you help?
Please imagine that we have a new church roof, a new kitchen and toilet area, the windows are repaired and the walls have all received a much-needed cost of paint.
What activities would you like to see taking place in your church building?
This is in addition to regular services and life events such as baptisms, weddings and funerals.
If you would like to organise a fundraising event or make a donation (including leaving a legacy in your will) towards the Roof Fund then please contact the Parish Office on (01524) 843135 for further information.
